What is standing in the way of your voice?

People standing in a circle listening. One is playing the guitar, the rest are watching. One is in the middle dancing.

This year a focus of mine is to express.

It is an entertaining journey. I’m exploring how far the walls I’ve built go. It extends far beyond my naked eye. I’m taking it one step at a time.

When I place my foot forward, I notice familiar thought patterns. Nerves filled with self-judgement and anxiety. The incessant inner voice thrives when I’m feeling this vulnerable.

I’m learning to sit in that discomfort. Ruminate in it. Understand where that feeling is coming from. Play with that edge.

Experiences like Sophia Tuv and Jacinta Percy’s Wild Voice workshop instil the confidence to keep lifting my leg forward. I had the joy of capturing one day of their two-day workshop the other week. To see so many people push through their boundaries was inspiring.

Everyone sitting in a circle looking at two people with instruments and microphones.

A moment I’ll hold onto: the first circle sing.

After sharing their personal vulnerabilities, everyone started singing in a circle. What came out was cathartic.

Everything standing in their way was transmitted into the centre of the room.

It grew. It swirled. It unified everyone in the space.

Tingles travelled up my spine watching this release. Clenches. Grimaces. Shaking. Tears.

I witnessed a glimpse of their life journey to that moment in time.

It made me feel so lucky to be human.

Thank you Sophia, Jacinta, and everyone at the workshop for teaching me that voice is medicine.
