Tales of Spice & Flavour - Ch. 3 - Tessellate-topia

Welcome back to Tales of Spice & Flavour. This series celebrates the abundance of stories, connections, and expressions at festivals.

Tessellate-topia is the main character of this third instalment. The Abbotsford Convent transformed into an adult playground showcasing a fusion of endless art forms. I felt grateful to be a part of the media team to capture the day.

City Gems

This is the first city edition of the series. I wanted to spotlight the dance spaces Naarm/Melbourne has.

A goal of mine has been to shoot my three inner-city favourites:

  1. Collingwood Children’s Farm

  2. Fairfield Ampitheatre

  3. Abbotsford Convent

All three share the power to transport me far from the city commotion. It feels easy to be present and let go of the hustle. It’s a nice change from a three-hour doof drive.

Tessellate-topia gave me the chance to complete this list. Here are some selections from the inner-city gems.

Tu eres una Mariposa

I was loaned a journal for a week. It needed its pages filled for an exhibition. I had licence to write anything in it. I carried it with me at Tessellate-topia passing it to the dancers with the prompt: ‘write something that will help the next person that reads this’.

I loved noticing the countless ways people express love.

Messages from the Tessellate-topians:

You are a butterfly!

Tessellate-topia

Tessellate-topia,
an adult playground.
Performances ranging through
vision, arts, and sound.

Space.
Space for choice.
Space for community voice.
Space to roam the gardens
with grace.

Navigating the unorthodox.
Dark dystopia.
Light utopia.
Perusing the paradox.

Here, rules are rarely adhered.
It’s a reward to be weird.
To be curious.
To seek
the mysterious.
